Recently, I read an article (Will the Jhelum Smile Again?) written by Col (Retd) Anil Athale on rediff. Although he has written nothing relevant or even worthwile in the article (For example he says the Indian Govt. sells rice at Rs. 3 a KG to Kashmiris!!!), it became a discussion board for me to explain to my fellow brothers the actual state of affairs in Kashmir.
I was more shocked than surprised to see everyone attacking me in a synchronized manner. And the sad part is, not even a single person talked anything relevant about the Kashmir issue.
Most of the readers appeared to be inspired by Sangh-Parivar-like-stories with base neither in reality nor in history.
People talked about "Islamic Terrorism", a term coined by God knows who (Since Islam preaches peace, equality and justice more than anybody else), about Pakistan, about all Muslims being terrorists and even about a new strategy of minorities in India whereby an author, Ashish commented that minorities were playing victims in India and were planning to divide-and-rule India. I quote, "Currently the strategy is simple. Single out the strongest part of the body from it, which can fight or protect the body. And then work on and target the weaker parts and eat them all away eventually."
God knows where such ideas come from! However, he was not the only one. Many others rhymed with him.
People even talked about Muslims taking a weekly snan (The only one in a week!!) on a Friday. Having heard such things for the first time, I didnt have ready answers to many of these questions, Since being a Muslim, I know that Islam teaches us to keep highest level of personal hygiene.
The point I'm trying to make here is that Islam has been grossly misunderstood by our fellow brothers and sisters. I dont however blame ignorant people asking irrelevant questions. Blame for such an image of Islam today equally rests with us as well.
We as Muslims have not only failed to create a correct perception about ourselves, but have also allowed the perception to become synonymous with terrorism and backwardness.
While I was trying my best to restrict the discussion to Kashmir, all others kept on raising questions about Islam, terrorism and Pakistan. Some even went to the extent of quoting what Islamic Terrorists had been doing across the globe.
Another friend even went ahead to suggest a partition of population. Unfortunately, we have a short-term memory and nobody in our generation remebers that more than 1 Million people, Hindus and Muslims, were brutally killed in the worst ever partition of our country, not very long back. People seem to have no compassion left for each other.
Since rediff has auto comment moderation, a fellow brother even went ahead and coined a slogan for us (Muslims), (albiet written backwards!) "ak hsed hey aran ah "MILSUM ORAM HSED OOAHCAB"
I wonder why our brothers and sisters, on the other side of the Pir Panjal cannot see Kashmir issue independent of these inconsequential doctored fables. I wonder why nobody wants to address the people of Kashmir instead of land of Kashmir. I wonder why nobody realises the value of human lives. I wonder why there is no compassion left in the world. I wonder.....
What went wrong...
We have been treated as property and not as individuals. In the 19th century, Gulab Singh purchased us for a discounted price of Rs. 75 lakhs (Since the original demanded amount was Rs 1.5 Crore), at less than Rs. 2 per person!!

Many Kashmiris have lost faith in the Indian system and the reasons are not very difficult to find.
How do you expect someone to trust you when more often than not people start doubting your allegience?

Kindly understand that Kashmir is not an economic problem. Kashmiri villages are self-sufficient with more than 95% of them having their own homes. Better than most of the people across the subcontinent. It is only the city that is dependant on salaries.
Now coming to your points...
1. You must see an event in entirety rather than in isolation. Pakistani flags have more to do with resentment and retaliation than with the aspirations. During last 20 years, more than 1,00,000 people were killed in Kashmir. out of 100,000 killings even if 1000 (1%) were innocent people, imagine what message such an act would have sent across and what anger it would have created against India.
Probably a similar anger what you today have against us.
2. I have tears in my eyes everytime I think about you people being forced to leave your homeland. I dont disagree that many of us were to an extent responsible for that henious act, but not all. However, the whole process of exodus was catalysed by
Jagmohan.
I am a personal witness to one of my Dad's KP friend coming to our home and telling us to also leave for Jammu for a couple of months. He said that the coming months were going to be dreaded but there would be normalcy after three months. This is what Jagmohan had probably promised the community.
His plan was to allow each separatist to cross the border and kill him on return. Otherwise, you tell me, with such a heavy army guard under his rule, how was it possible for young boys and men to board buses and trucks from Lalchowk for border in broad daylight? Anyone will tell you these were common sights during those days.
He had kept army buses and trucks busy evacuating the city of all KPs.
He wanted to "cleanse" the valley of all antinational elements. He wanted to protect KPs "isolating" them untill such period he finished his job.
Even Dr. Farooq Abdullah has went on record to endorse this theory.

It is improper to associate religion with terrorism.
1. Muslim population in India is about 20 Crores. At the most, all terrorists put together that belong to our religion (at least namesake, as terrorists don’t have any religion) would not be more than 2,000 (0.001%). Now you might say (which I don’t agree), that local Muslims support them, let us say this population is another 20,000 (10 times!!!), it would still be just 0.011%. Isn’t it unfair to brand the rest of 99.99% of the community as terrorists?
2. Have you ever heard of Christian terrorism? (In 1946, the Manhattan Engineer District published a study that concluded that 66,000 people were killed at Hiroshima out of a population of 255,000. Of that number, 45,000 died on the first day and 19,000 during the next four months. In addition, "several hundred" survivors were expected to die from radiation-induced cancers and lukemia over the next 30 years. (This report is also known as the Oughterson Commission study.)

a. At least 384 persons including 129 civilians, 162 security forces and 93 alleged Naxalites have been killed in the Naxal conflict during January to September 2007. The highest number of killings were reported from Chhattisgarh (208), followed by Andhra Pradesh (59), Jharkhand (44) and Bihar (28). The Naxal conflict has serious implications on the enjoyment of human rights
b. According to Home Affairs Annual Report 2005-6, 76 districts in the 9 States of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are badly affected by Naxal violence though in varying degrees. Nevertheless, unofficially 13 states, including targeted, are affected. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are coming under the Naxalite affected map.
c. At least 60 Christians have been killed over the past two months in eastern India in a brutal backlash to the murder of a revered Hindu holy man, a national bishops' body said Friday. “Claiming that the situation in Kandhamal and elsewhere in Orissa was well under control, the state government on Monday said at least 558 houses and 17 places of worship were burnt in communal riots after VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati's killing on August 23.”
I could probably go on and on and include as many religions that exist. Every religion has black sheep. You cannot and must not brand the entire religion as terrorists..

I strongly oppose any kind of such activities and want that everyone who resorts to terrorism must be brought to justice.
However, quite often it is rather not as simple as it looks.
Suppose, an innocent person is taken away by police, labeled as a terrorist and killed. Just imagine, what his family will go through? Under what influence would his children grow and what hatred would they have against the government?
It is easy for you and me to enter a "drawing-room" discussion. Only the person who suffers knows what it really means...Some of our bollywood movies have depicted such stories.
I don’t say all encounters or killings are fake. But tell me; out of 100,000 killings in Kashmir over the past 20 years even if 1000 (1%) were such innocent people, imagine what message such an act sends across.
I strongly condemn terrorist attacks and would like all terrorists to be brought to justice. But if such a terrorist is a son of an innocent person who was killed by the police, then even you might want to rethink.

While I have already replied to the plight of our Hindu brothers above (Referred to as KPs, Kashmiri Pundits), it might be of interest for you to know that total number of KPs killed till date is 100(Govt. of India estimates) against 100,000 Kashmiri Muslims who have been killed till date (for the same peroid).

Dear brother, Amarnath Yatra has been going on for the past so many years and Kashmiris have been offering the entire forestland for its use. Why do you want it restricted to just a few acres? This year again, a record number of Yatris had the Darshan. Would this have been possible without the support of locals? At that altitude? I bet no.
The entire issue was a political one, with elections just around the corner. Hindus and Muslims both were instigated to rise against each other. It was for the first time that one could see a Jammu Vs Kashmir divide in the state.
About Kashmiris flashing green flags. I have already explained that it has more to do with resentment and retaliation rather than aspirations.
Again, if you see the difference in treatment, against one or two persons killed during the same violence in Jammu, more than 40 people were killed by police in Kashmir (Incidentally, that number is just about half the number of KPs killed till date). Even hospitals were teargassed. What justification does one have for that? We need a compassionate treatment.

Brother, you might have seen it as well. That was a time of dreaded terrorism. No one dared to even whisper anything against the terrorists. Leave common man, even the forces were scared. Even if an Armywallah used to pee on the roadside, 5-6 gunmen used to guard him.
At such a point, how could anyone expect anyone to help. Even for Muslims who were killed by the terrorists, the entire family was labeled as "Gaddaar" or "Mukhbir" and people, even their neighbours and friends used to distance themselves from them, fearing to be labeled as "Gaddaars" or "Mukhbirs"

Regarding your statement that Kashmir has been part of India for 5000 years, I can only laugh. There was no India in the sense in which you see it today before 1947. If you talk about Idea of India, yes, I agree it was there but part of that idea were Vietnam, Thailand, and whole of SouthEast Asia stretching across Afghanistan to the very end of Hindukush.
This is not to denigrate or ridicule you, this is to just point out that we are not looking at the right problem.

The issue of Kashmir is not a hindu-muslim issue. It was created as a hindu-muslim issue to hide the nefarious designs and actions of Nehru-Gandhi Family and we are paying for that.
We say that Kashmir acceeded to India under a treaty signed by Hari Singh. Under that treaty, our obligation (one among many) as a union was to protect Kashmir (meaning people and land). We broke it within a few weeks when Nehru stopped Army from completeing the job of throwing out pakistanis from POK. So we could not protect and thus we broke the treaty.
Many more incidents in the middle and do a time jump after 60 years to 2008.
some lunatics impose economic blockade and union keeps of watching silently instead of using Army to clear the blockade. The blockade should not have been allowed to persist. No part of Union has the right to impose blockade on another part of union. We lost the moral right to have Kashmir in the Union with that act which was not actively condemned by us. What do we expect? Do we expect that Kashmiris should kill thier families and everybody so that we can spend our summers in cool climate. sorry sir, I do not agree and I would also have done the same which many Kashmiris have done.
Regarding Pandits, you already have heard from Farooq Abdullah. JAgmohan was the same person who was also involved in killing of muslims in Turkman Gate incident during emergency.
If we do not treat Kashmiris as sons of soils with the same rights and responsibilities, this problem is not going to go away. We might be able to win Kashmir but we will lose Kashmiris.
Laslty, on terrorism let us not forget that among the dead by terrorism in Kashmir more than 90% have been Kashmiris themselves.

I am sure if you look closely at the history of the dispute you will understand how this is not a “mistake” that needs to be FORGIVEN, but, as has been stated a number of times through this blog, a problem of identity.

Dear Blogger, I agree on many points with you. I am a hardcore Hindu but always respect all the religions as the moral of all is same. You effort is appreciable but still there are lot of things that need to be cleared before Kashmiries are given a pure Indian identity. Or I think I have written wrong. kashmiries are Indians, no doubt, but why are they not allowing to remove article 370 from the state. That is one of the major factor that makes you special from other Indians and that is not at all acceptable to any Indian.
Secondly there is one way for funds for Kashmir. J&K never pays any kind of taxes etc to central Govt. whereas all other states do. J&K never pays any interest or even loan back to central Govt. Thousands of crores are always given to the state as free Aid every year where as there are comparatively more poor states in India who doesn't get even half of it. So friend these are the main reasons which bring differences between kashmiris and other Indians. Why don't you guys raise your voice against this kind of unequality??
Terrorists are getting support from muslim communities. Still a majority of muslims is not ready to even agree with us that young muslim guys are turning into terrorists. They are trying to proove forces wrong. So what does it show. Fresh case is the encounter with jamia Milia college students where Delhi police lost its one of the brave and honest Inspector. Very educated and reputed muslim personalities are raising questions on it. What is it all..?? If these kind of things keep happening, how can we expect equality and harmony between both the religions..

3.. Regarding Article 370 and other taxes and Aid, why do you think that the Indian Government gives such a special status and special grants to Kashmir? What is the justification to treat one state differently from another? In stead of I giving reasons, why dont you ask these questions to yourself? Think...think why a sensible government would do that? If there is no justification for that?
